Adam’s Peak, Sri Lanka

Adam’s Peak is a mountain which is located in Sri Lanka. It is 2.243 meters tall and there is a 1.8 meters rock formation near the summit which resembles a footprint. According to Hindu tradition, the footprint belongs to the Buddha. As a result of the various ethnicities that live in the country, the mountain is called different names. Sinhalese people call the mountain Sri Pada, which is derived from Sanskrit. Christian and Muslim people call it the Adam’s Peak, as they believe the footprint to be belong to Adam himself when he first set foot on Earth. Hindu people believe that the footprint belong to the Hindu deity, Shiva, therefore, they call the mountain Shiva padam, which can be translated as Shiva’s foot.
