Kefalonia or Cephalonia, also formerly known as Kephallenia or Kefallinia, is the largest one in the Ionian Islands group in the west of Greece. It is also the sixth largest island after Evoia, Rhodes, Crete, Lesbos and Chios. Having one-third of the island’s population, the capital city of Kefalonia is Argostoli. The main population was 35.801 in 2011 census although the island reached a population of 70.000 people in 1896. However, it gradually declined in the 20th century, especially due to a strong earthquake that occurred in 1953.
