Covering an area of 1.883 square kilometers, the island of Maui is the second largest island in Hawaii and the seventeenth largest island in the United States. In 2010, it was stated that Maui had a population of 144,444 people, which made it the third most populous Hawaiian island. The island takes its name from one of the native Hawaiian traditions, the legend of Hawaiʻiloa. It is told that Hawaiʻiloa, who was the discoverer of the Hawaiian Islands, named the island after his son whose was named after the demigod Māui.
