The Berlin Wall was constructed to prevent the people in East Germany from escaping to the West Germany on August 1961 with the order of the German Democratic Republic. The Wall which had been referred as the Wall of Shame in the west for years had a length of 46 kilometers. Then it was torn down on November 1989 after the East German government announced the citizens could visit the West Germany. Today, there are some parts of the wall that were left as a memorial. Those parts have become popular tourist attractions and can be considered as a landmark of the city of Berlin.
